Anniversary of Delta County 1883-1958—County Superintendent of Schools

Miss Martha Savage, today’s County Superintendent of Schools, has served in this capacity longer than any of her predecessors since the county was created in 1883.  Miss Savage began her term in 1941 and is in her 18th year of service.

A total of 18 persons have served as County Superintendent of Schools’ since Delta County was first created.

G. H. Merchant was the first to hold office and served from 1883 to 1885.

Others include: M. B. McGinty, 1886-1889; Phil M. Condit, 1890-1891;  Alice A. Royce, 1902-1904; Emma G. Myers, 1905-1908; Mrs. Mildred Anderson, 1909-1910; Bel McMichael, 1911-1914; and Adah Price, 1915-1918.

From 1919 to 1922, Mrs. Grace Cummings was County Superintendent of Schools. Alice Burnett served from 1923-1930; Mrs. Florence C. Weeks, 1931-1932; Hazel Leavitt, 1933-1938; Dorothy Johnson, 1939; and Mabel Fetz, 1939-1940
